WHAT IS THE GIG?

theGIG is a coworking space and entrepreneurial center located on Main Street in Exmore, a town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, about 60miles north of Norfolk, VA and 70miles south of Salisbury, MD.  theGIG has counter workspace, communal tables, lounge space, private desks (first come first serve) and a meeting room available for hourly rentals.   The atmosphere is designed to inspire both collaborative work and focused productivity.   We offer self-employed, small business owners and entrepreneurs of the Eastern Shore a place network, brainstorm, and work, while drinking as much coffee as needed to do so.

OUR MISSION

We seek to cultivate a community of entrepreneurs, mentors, investors, small business owners, freelancers, remote workers, makers and artisans, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia by creating a space to serve them. We believe that creating a culture of enterprise by developing community awareness around Shore entrepreneurs will lead to a growing, dynamic, and resilient Shore economy.  We believe that an inspiring gathering place allows these individuals to connect, share new ideas and technologies, and receive guidance to move forward.   A place to Gather, Innovate, and Grow. 

This mission has been years in the making.  A way to encourage those on the Shore who wish to pursue a dream that entails a business enterprise, to educate them on how to refine that dream into a plan, and to offer them a network to other parties that can impart advice, support, and potentially funding.  Read more on the expertise of our Founders and Board below.

WHO SHOULD JOIN?

As self-employed business owners, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote individuals we work alone quite often.  While the independence is a positive if can feel isolating at times.  We also sometimes lack the amenities we might need to be successful, from high speed internet, quality printers and scanners and a professional setting for a meeting. The right workspace is hard to find… lack of coffee shops, hotels and needing a break from our own home offices can get frustrating.  Come join us and collide with like-minded people like you!  

HOW DOES MEMBERSHIP WORK?

TheGIG offers monthly membership subscriptions as well as daily passes. Monthly member can come and go in the space as often as they like 24/7 and have access to the printers, high speed internet, first come first serve desks (‘hotdesks’), coffee, and communal areas whenever they need them. Their membership also comes with credits to the meeting room. We also have day passes for people visiting the area in need of a space to work. In addition, the Gig has two spaces that can be rented out by members as well as non-members. Our private office can be rented daily or weekly. theGIG brings together a team and board with a wide range of experiences, industries and expertise.  They are working towards the success of theGIG, as well as plan to make themselves available to offer members assistance with the many issues that come with starting a business. 

JOE BETIT

Joseph Betit has worked in corporate firms of all sizes, city governments, the US Government, owned his own consulting practice, and taught at three universities. His work has taken him all over the US from Alaska and California to the East Coast, as well as all over the world.

Joe retired from the Bechtel Corporation in January 2016 as the global Corporate Manager of Survey. Bechtel is one of the largest global engineering heavy and industrial construction companies. While as a professor at the Old Dominion University  engineering school he pioneered the development of engineering surveying distance learning systems delivering ABET accredited courses to geographically-dispersed students in Virginia, North Carolina, Arizona and Washington. Nationally and internationally, he continues his collaboration with innovative colleagues across the globe working in UAV systems (air and water drones), digital construction project delivery, construction robotics, the emerging Internet Cloud based real-time collaborative construction systems and entrepreneurial commercialization of these systems.

Mr. Betit is a California Professional Land Surveyor, Past President of the California Land Surveyors Association and currently a citizen member of the Accomack-Northampton Planning and Development Commission, Economic Development Committee and of the ANPDC EDC Foundational and Entrepreneurial Subcommittee.  Mr. Betit holds a BS Surveying and Photogrammetry (now Geomatics Engineering) from California State University, Fresno and an MS International Finance, from the joint program of University Westminster, London and CERAM (now SKEMA) at Sophia-Antipolis, France.  He currently resides with his wife Amy in Pungoteague, Virginia which has been their home since 2000 and they are owners of The Bear and Cub Coffee Shop.

RON MATTHEWS

Ronald (Ron) F. Matthews, Jr., CPA, MBA (Matthews) is the Founder and CEO of MedCatalyst, LLC, RevolutionMD, LLC and Matthews and Company, CPAs.   He works closely with entrepreneurs to grow and sustain businesses.  He has extensive experience working with teams managing emerging and growing healthcare organizations in public, private and private equity environments.  He is passionate about working with entrepreneurs and small businesses to maintain their independence by bringing the latest processes and technology to leverage down costs and improve efficiencies through the effective use of data.  Additionally, he is focused on local and regional businesses to sustainably build our economy to provide opportunities for all.

Over a 35 year career, Matthews spent three years in public accounting and then held various positions in finance, operations, revenue cycle and corporate development in a number of healthcare organizations, including TeamHealth, Inc., Coastal Physician Group, Premier, Inc., Complete Management, Inc. and Envision Healthcare Holdings.  Additionally, he is one of the founders of Shore Growth Ventures, LLC and Creek Mountain Partners, Inc., which are both local venture capital funds providing capital to new ideas and innovative technologies and processes.

He is a CPA (Commonwealth of Virginia) and has served as a board member and on the executive committee of the Emergency Department Practice Management Association or EDPMA. He is also a member of the American Institute of CPAs and Healthcare Financial Management Association.   Matthews also is a member of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, Bay Creek Resort and Club, Exmore Rotary Club, Ballyhack Golf Club, Eastern Shore of Virginia Library Foundation, and Accomack Northampton Planning District Commission Economic Development Committee. 

Matthews received a BA in Accounting from North Carolina State University and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.  He and his wife Tammy reside in Red Bank outside of Melfa, Virginia and have two children and five grandchildren.  They returned “home” to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where each of their families first arrived in the early 1600s, to raise their family and enjoy what makes the Eastern Shore one of the most beautiful places on Earth. 

KERRY KOBE

After two decades in corporate technology leadership roles in Chicago, Kerry moved to the Eastern Shore in the Fall of 2018 ready to apply her experiences to entrepreneurial ventures.  While growing her internet consulting business from her home office had its benefits, slow internet frustrations forced her to venture out for other spots to work; looking for a coffee house or hotel lobby like she was accustomed to in her past urban life.  Slowly she realized those places were almost non-existent in a rural area making her feel more isolated from other small business owners and freelancers.  Kerry began to realize what she really missed beyond the space or location was the motivation and inspiration of being around other entrepreneurs.  In an effort to solve her pain point, she conceived of ‘theGIG’ and through the support of the Town of Exmore was quickly introduced to Joe, Pat and Ron who had been working to solve this problem for quite some time, and voila, a new opportunity for the community is underway!

Kerry has twenty years of project management and technology experience at wealth management firm C.W. Henderson & Associates in Chicago, IL. In addition, she has always been passionate about her own entrepreneurial ‘side hustles’ and those of others. She is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University.  She now lives in Silver Beach, VA with her fiancé, two future step-children, two dogs and runs her marketing and design business, Sweet Sanity, from both her home studio and theGIG – you’ll see her there often!
